Brief History of Jack Russell Terriers

In the mid-1800s, a hunting parson named John Russell bred terriers of a suitable type and temperament to hunt fox in England.

The original fox terrier was the same type that Reverend John Russell bred in the 1800s, but when it became recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), its conformation quickly changed to suit the whims of the show fanciers. Eventually, it evolved into the deep-chested, narrow-jawed, straight-shouldered show breed known as today's Fox Terrier. John Russell continued on to breed his own strain of fox terriers for fox hunting, known today as the Jack Russell Terrier. These terriers were loyal, intelligent, well conformed with straight legs, well balanced, and small-chested.

Our goal for the last 25 years has been to continue in the tradition of the Reverend, breeding Jack Russells with small chests, the finest conformation, outstanding working ability and temperament, and most importantly, to maintain the integrity of the breed as it has been for more than 100 years.

It is important to note that it is the responsibility, integrity, and dedication of the breeder to maintain the wonderful qualities of the Jack Russell. I have hunted my terriers in the US and England, and know the attributes necessary for maintaining this unique breed.

Many worry that the AKC recognition will ruin the Jack Russell Terriers as we have known them. It is the integrity of the breeder and their dedication to maintaining the conformation attributes required for working that will ensure the maintenance of the breed. AKC is only a registry. It's the breeders that control the destiny of their respective breeds. If each breeder truly knows the Jack Russell Terrier, they would never attempt to change a breed that is so unique in personality and enjoyment.

Puppies are usually available, adults are occasionally available, and stud services are available to approved bitches.

Puppies and Occasional Adults for Sale

Horsemasters Farm has Jack Russell Terrier puppies for sale. We require that all puppies are sold with a puppy purchase agreement. The new owner is guaranteed that the puppy is free of inherited abnormalities and that the puppy is registered with the American Kennel Club.

Also, the buyer's responsibility in this agreement guarantees that the puppy will be properly cared for during his or her lifetime and that the buyer will be a responsible pet owner for the duration of their life together.

All pups leave Horsemasters with at least one shot starting at 6 weeks of age, 3 wormings starting at 3 weeks old, a shot and worming record, feeding instructions, and a generous supply of food to make the transition to their new home a smooth one.
